The GGF’s campaign for glass and glazing to be more prominent within the forthcoming Government Green Deal scheme took yet another positive step recently with the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) acknowledging that windows will be included in Green Deal claims.
In the news section of DECC’s website it was revealed that “The scheme will involve an extensive range of energy efficiency measures including replacing leaky windows”
This early government recognition is marked progress following months of lobbying by the GGF executive to fully raise the profile of energy efficient windows and their impact on the environment.
GGF’s Chief Executive Nigel Rees commented on the announcement with cautious optimism, “This is good news for the industry, but we still have a lot of work ahead to present the facts on energy efficient glass and glazing”
To help people transform their homes to be more energy efficient and environmentally friendly, the Government’s Green Deal will start next year and is anticipated to be the biggest home improvement initiative in the UK for over 50 years. The GGF is continuing to do its utmost for its member companies and the glass & glazing industry as a whole, making sure it’s fully considered in the ongoing debates with government ministers, MPS, energy companies and potential Green Deal providers.
Nigel Rees concludes, “In homes with non energy efficient windows, up to 25% of heat loss can occur therefore glass and glazing has to be a key part of the Green Deal criteria when it comes to reducing the consumer’s carbon footprint and fuel costs”
With the Green Deal scheme due to be launched by the Government in October 2012, the GGF will be monitoring the progress with interest.
