Tribute to Barry Chilvers (1950-2020)

The GGF was saddened to hear of the recent passing of Barry Chilvers former Director of Customer Services at Anglian Home Improvements.

Barry will be remembered by many GGF Members for his long term commitment to the GGF Consumer Management Group where as Chairman for almost 10 years he oversaw many changes in the GGF’s consumer facing services.

On hearing of his passing, Peter Stuttard Head of Membership said, “Barry was a great supporter of the GGF. It was very sad to hear this news. My thoughts go to his family at this time.”

As Chair of the Consumer Management Group, Barry oversaw the GGF revision of the Consumer Code to ensure it was aligned to the Consumer Rights Act (2015) and also supported the Federation on its consumer facing benefits such as the GGF Conciliation Scheme and the award winning consumer website, MyGlazing.com. In addition to his work on the Consumer Management Group, Barry also contributed his knowledge of customer service as a Member of the GGF Home Improvement Executive for over ten years. 

With over 40 years in the industry (mostly with Anglian), Barry was also a great advocate of training and was a former director of Proskills in the 1990s. In addition he also served on the Board of the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) as the industry was facing tighter regulations with the introduction of Competent Person Schemes.

James Lee, GGF Director of External Affairs paid tribute, “I will not only remember Barry for his outstanding contribution to the GGF and the industry, but also that he was a nice guy who shared his time and expertise generously. My condolences and thoughts go to his family for their loss.”

Welsh Government releases Approved Documents L and F for Consultation

The Welsh Government has published Consultation Documents in regard to the revision of both Approved Documents L & F – Existing Dwellings & non-Domestic, although there is further documentation to follow on non-Domestic.

The GGF Technical department has quickly reviewed the 6 documents within the Consultation and will provide more detailed information to the Members once the documents have been fully received and reviewed.

Here is a summary of the proposals the GGF Technical team has identified so far.

Approved Documents L and F timelines

Dwellings

  • Spring 2021 new documents for Part L and Part F to be published
  • Autumn 2021 legislation to come into force

Non dwellings

  • Autumn 2021 new documents for Part L and Part F to be published
  • Early 2022 legislation to come into force

Energy Ratings and U Values

Approved Document L : Dwellings (New, replacement or enlarged windows and doors) The proposed changes detailed in Table 10.1 of the proposal include window and door U value reduction to 1.4 down from the current 1.6, and WER B down from the current WER C. The DSER value has yet to be proposed.

Decorative furniture in glass can still be disregarded when calculating U values or energy ratings.

Approved Document F : Existing dwellings. Proposals include the introduction of Table 3.1 that shows that works will be allocated one of two classifications, minor or major.

Changing less than 30% of the total existing windows is classified as minor, more than 30% is classified as major.

Diagram 3.1 allows for a calculation of the overall works and gives a category rating of either A, B or C.

  • Category A – Unlikely that the work has reduced the ventilation provision of the dwelling below the requirements of AD F1, no further ventilation required.
  • Category B – Likely the work has reduced the ventilation provision of the dwelling below the requirements of AD F1, more ventilation may be required.
  • Category C – Very likely the work has significantly reduced the ventilation provision of the dwelling below the requirements of AD F1, more ventilation may be required.

Replacing windows

  • If an existing window has one or more background ventilators, the replacement should also include them. They must be no smaller and must be controllable
  • If the existing ventilator size is not known then
  • habitable rooms require minimum 8000mm equivalent area (ea)
  • Kitchens require minimum 8000mm ea
  • Bathrooms require minimum 4000mm ea

There are further guidance notes for dwellings with mechanical extract and mechanical supply and extract included in 3.14 of AD F1 (proposed)

GGF reacts to Spending Review

On 25 November, Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced a one year Spending Review, covering the financial year from April 2021 to March 2022.

On seeing the Review in more detail, John Agnew, GGF Managing Director commented, “We appreciate the Government has been under incredible fiscal pressure in trying to deal with the pandemic, and we welcome the national infrastructure strategy and housebuilding investment, however it was very disappointing to see no significant investment or plans for the home improvement sector.”

In the Review, the Chancellor, set resource and capital budgets for the fiscal calendar for 2021-22. For the second successive year there was no announcement of a full three-year spending review, this delay is due to the fiscal uncertainty caused by the coronavirus but this lack of long term commitment is likely to cause uncertainty for many businesses who are planning beyond March 2022.

This year, the GGF made submissions to HM Treasury as part of the Comprehensive Spending Review consultation process, outlining the case for new and more increased government initiatives to assist and incentivise the glazing sector in its support for the drive to Net Zero. The GGF continues to make this case via the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and environmentally focused Parliamentary bodies.

This Spending Review was accompanied by a relatively bleak economic projection by the Office for Budgetary responsibility. The focus of the Chancellor’s speech was protecting jobs, capital projects for hospitals and schools and, unsurprisingly, tackling the coronavirus pandemic. 

John Agnew added, “The glass and glazing industry has been devastated in 2020 and to their credit many companies in our industry have shown great resilience, innovation and spirit to try and come through these extremely difficult times. Given the Government’s green agenda and zero carbon 2050 targets, the Spending Review was an ideal opportunity to issue a statement of intent, by offering incentives to consumers and companies, to improve the energy efficiency in the UK’s existing housing stock. As it stands, outside of a few relatively small and unambitious energy efficient schemes, that will have little impact our sector, there is nothing in the Spending Review to support the glazing home improvement sector.”     

On new build, Chancellor Sunak did announce some positive news “To build housing, we’re introducing a £7.1 billion National Home Building Fund. On top of our £12.2 billion Affordable Homes Programme. As we invest billions in the building of new homes, we’re also simplifying our planning system to ensure homes are built where they are needed most.”

In addition to the spending commitment to new build and infrastructure the Government has also added addition funding to skills and apprenticeships. The Green Home Grant Scheme has been extended by 12 months and will receive an extra £1b but this will only improve 600k existing homes and only allows for single glazing upgrades to double or triple glazing.

Northern Ireland: Restrictions following latest “Circuit Breaker” lockdown

From today (27th of November), Northern Ireland starts new restrictions enforced under the banner of “Circuit Breaker”.

The impact on the Glass and Glazing industry should be minimal, we have detailed the key points below;  

Working from home

It is important that those who can work from home should and it is strongly advised to work with homeowners and customer remotely where possible.

Working on sites and in manufacturing

Construction sites and manufacturing can continue to operate providing workers adhere to governmental and local guidance.

Working in other people’s homes

Working in homes can continue for building or maintenance work, services of trades or professionals can also continue. See extract below from the Northern Ireland Executive website;

“Households are not allowed to mix indoors in private homes. Certain exemptions apply, including:

  • building or maintenance work
  • the services of trades or professions (close contact services are not allowed)”

Working in the supply chain

Working in the building/construction supply chain can continue. See extract below from the Northern Ireland Executive website;

Showrooms

In the Northern Ireland Executive’s latest restrictions there has been no specific guidance or legislation around the opening or closure of window and door showrooms – though this could be considered an outlet for building supplies.

Each business is different, so if you have a showroom and are unsure if you should open or close please use the following guidance which could help with your decision.

  • To be 100% safe – close your showroom until after the lockdown
  • If you are considering opening your showroom, conduct a proper risk assessment for your employees, customers and any other visitors to your showroom
  • If you do open your showroom, ensure you adhere to the general Safe Guidance and social distancing
  • If you are opening your showroom it is advisable to;
    • operate an appointment only basis for your customers to ensure a more controlled and safer operating environment
    • redesign the workplace to allow adequate distancing
    • face coverings for customers and employees with customers
    • Increase ventilation etc.  

Please note: your local authority can force you to close your showroom if required during lockdown.

Door to door canvassing

Though not specified in the Northern Ireland Executive’s latest guidance and restrictions, door to door canvassing can continue, but it is advised that you follow these precautionary steps.

  • ensure that all canvassers are fully briefed on the safe guidance;
  • canvassing is conducted from outside the property, and;
  • social distancing is maintained and;
  • the safe guidance is followed, and;
  • No physical contact should be made with the householder or occupants.
  • Please check with your local authorities if you are in any doubt

Please note: Local authorities may ask companies to stop door to door canvassing and they can legally prohibit this practice.

Further Notes:

  1. Any work that you continue to undertake through the “Circuit breaker” must be in-line with COVID working guidance.
  2. These restrictions can vary with each local authority, ensure to monitor your local advice and guidance.

Green Homes Grant Voucher Scheme extended by one year

The Prime Minister has announced a one-year extension to the Green Homes Grant Voucher Scheme, until the end of March 2022. The announcement was made as part of the Prime Minister’s ambitious 10 Point Plan for a green industrial revolution.

Homeowners across England will now have until the end of March 2022 to have energy efficiency upgrades to their homes completed through the Green Homes Grant Voucher Scheme, helping up to 600,000 households save up to £600 on their energy bills.

The scheme funds up to two-thirds of the cost of green home improvements up to £5,000, or 100% of the cost for homeowners on low incomes, up to £10,000. Measures covered include insulation of walls, floors and roofs, double or triple glazing when replacing single glazing, and low-carbon heating like heat pumps.

The Prime Minister announced the extension of both the Green Homes Grant and the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme in his 10 Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution, designed to help the country build back greener and help reach the UK’s key target for net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

£1 billion will be available next year into making new and existing homes and public buildings more energy efficient, including through the Green Homes Grant Voucher Scheme and the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme.

The GGF has persistently lobbied Government for an extension to the scheme and the additional 12 months, now gives companies a chance to register to the scheme and undertake the work.

John Agnew, GGF Managing Director, “We welcome the news of an extension to the scheme but we will continue discussions with government to change glazing from a secondary measure to a primary measure. In addition, we are also asking government to consider replacing inefficient double glazing as well as single glazing under the scheme.” 

The GGF understands that over 40,000 vouchers have been issued in the first few months of the scheme. GGF Guidance on latest COVID restrictions in England’s Tiered System

Following the Government’s recent raft of restrictions around the tiered system in England, the GGF has taken time to fully analyse and consult with Government and local councils on the restrictions and what they mean for your business if you operate in England. Please see outline below:

Retail

Showrooms and concession sales outlets can open but should follow the safe guidance and social distancing guidelines.

Where members retail units are not self-contained e.g. located within another store. They will be required to close if located within an enclosed premises unless they can be accessed directly from the street.  

Manufacturing

On Construction Sites

Construction sites can remain open but following the Site Operating Procedures version 6 set out by the Construction Leadership Council and approved by Government. http://www.constructionleadershipcouncil.co.uk/news/site-operating-procedures-update-version-6-now-available/

Working in people’s homes

Those working in the construction sector (including salespeople, surveyors, tradespeople etc.,) can enter/work in a property if necessary. However if doing so should follow the safe guidance and social distancing guidelines.

  • If you are working in someone’s home;
    • Ensure you follow the Government’s safer guidance which has been integrated into the GGF’s Safe Guides
    • Please ensure you conduct a risk assessment
    • Please observe the social distancing and PPE guidance

Sales activity

The Government guidance on door to door selling and sales activity generally is quite clear and the GGF advises that all Members who conduct door to door sales activity to cease with immediate effect. Please see extract below from the Government Guidance. 

“Door-to-door sales should not be taking place, and sales activities should be conducted remotely (such as by phone, online, or mail).”

Whilst sales activity should be done remotely, it is worth noting that pre-booked appointments that can’t be done remotely can continue if necessary. For example, if the homeowner has no internet access. If carrying out this activity, then please ensure the safe guidance and social distancing guidance is followed.

GGF Guidance as Scotland moves to Level 4 Lockdown Restrictions

From tomorrow (20.11.2020) at 6pm, COVID-19 restrictions in parts of Scotland will move from Level 3 to Level 4 and with changes being implemented that will impact companies in the following areas.

The City of Glasgow, Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire, East Dunbartonshire, West Dunbartonshire, North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire, East Ayrshire, South Ayrshire, Stirling and West Lothian.

Please see below the new Level 4 guidance that will be in place for three weeks from 20 November 2020.

Working in over peoples homes

Tradespeople should only go into a house in a level 4 area to carry out or deliver essential work or services, for example:

  • to carry out utility (electricity, gas, water, telephone, broadband) safety checks, repairs, maintenance and installations
  • to carry out repairs and maintenance that would otherwise threaten the household’s health and safety
  • to deliver goods or shopping
  • to deliver, install or repair key household furniture and appliances such as washing machines, fridges and cookers
  • to support a home move, for example furniture removal

Safety when working in someone else’s home

When working in someone’s house tradespeople should stay 2 metres apart from the people who live there, wear a face covering and follow good hand and respiratory hygiene.

Retail

The following essential retail can remain open, All other non-essential retail will be expected to close. 

  • homeware, building supplies and hardware stores,

Face coverings

Face coverings should be worn in the following places but not limited to:

  • any indoor communal area
  • in a workplace, and
  • where there are no measures in place to keep persons separated by either a partition, or distance of at least two metres,

Note: “communal area” means an area where persons mingle or gather, such as:

  • passageways
  • stairs
  • lifts
  • staff rooms
  • training rooms
  • changing rooms
  • entrances

The GGF will continue to monitor this situation and will ensure Members are kept up to speed on any further changes in Scotland, the rest of the UK and Ireland.

New GGF Datasheet on Fire Resistant Glazing IGUs Launched

The GGF is pleased to announce the launch of the new GGF Datasheet – A Guide to achieving Mandatory Compliance for the manufacture of Fire-Resistant Insulating Glass Units (ref.5.16).

This new datasheet has been produced and aligned with the very latest legislation and industry developments. The new Datasheet is intended to provide industry guidance to Insulating Glass Unit (IGU) manufacturers who focus on fire resistance as an essential characteristic of the IGUs they place on the European Market.

David Borland, GGF Senior Technical Officer said “We are pleased to launch this new Datasheet that provides valuable and up to date technical information for Members operating in this sector.”

GGF withdraws from CTSI scheme

The GGF has withdrawn from the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) Consumer Codes Approval Scheme due to its onerous auditing process.

John Agnew, GGF Managing Director commented, “The GGF has given the scheme every chance to prove its value to the Federation and our Members. In the last five years the GGF has invested in its implementation and promotion but it has become increasingly difficult to operate due to the extensive auditing process.”

The GGF joined the Scheme in February 2016 which resulted in the Consumer Code being approved by the CTSI, and allowed the GGF and consumer facing Members to use the CTSI logo when dealing with consumers.

John Agnew added, “From March of this year, I have attended all membership meetings and engaged with members on this matter to advise that the GGF were leaving the scheme and our rationale for doing so. This decision has been approved by the GGF Board and was taken as part of a review of member benefits to ensure that the GGF provides more value for money to all members.”

Though the GGF Consumer Code will no longer be endorsed by CTIS, the Consumer Code itself (which is wholly owned by the GGF), is still in place and all consumer facing members must adhere to it as per the GGF Rules of Membership. A new revised version of the Consumer Code without the CTSI references will be available soon for download from the GGF website. In the meantime, Members who have been using the CTSI logo, are asked to remove the logo and any references from their website and marketing collateral where applicable.

Masterframe shortlisted for ‘Best Window’ Build It Award

Masterframe have been shortlisted for the Build It, Best Window award for 2020.

Carol Slade, Managing Director said “We are once again honoured to be shortlisted for this award.  This year we entered our Vintage Conservation sash window which is available to project partners with larger developments.   The sash windows were installed into a prestigious development at Lambton Park for Miller homes.  The Lambton Estate is owned by the Lambton family and currently belongs to Edward Lambton, 7th Earl of Durham.”

Carol continues “Due to the nature and history of the site it was important that all aspects of the houses on the development retained the Victorian features of the Estate.  Great care was taken with the Lambton family overseeing the design process.

Sash windows were a key element of the design and a number of manufacturers submitted samples and discussed the project requirements with the family’s agents and architects.

After seeing our Vintage Conservation window with its patented Timberweld® butt jointed construction along with slim meeting rail and staff bead frame detail, their search was over.

Masterframe worked closely with the architects and developers to produce a window design specification suitable for this unique development and we are most proud to see our products in-situ in their beautiful surroundings”.

The celebrated product was used to deliver the stunning 5,500 square-meter glass façade of the Qatar National Library.

The 42,000 square meter structure is home to over a million books, and 500,000 digital editions. The library’s most valuable volumes are kept in a six-meter deep, glass-ceilinged room reminiscent of an excavated labyrinth.

Its diamond-shaped façade area has been designed to filter out the glaring Middle Eastern sun, while still letting in enough light to illuminate the library interior.

The façade has been designed without any metallic elements, ensuring there are no thermal bridges to conduct heat into the building – a crucial consideration, since not only does Qatar routinely experience summer temperatures in excess of 40 degrees Celsius, it’s unfortunately a part of the world that’s being severely affected by global warming.

Its double-glazed IGUs are curved, ensuring that the façade is both self-supporting, and exceptionally resistant to wind and other strong weather.

A low-e coating, and a solar control coating, filter and reflect sunlight, and a grey grid of 3mm metallic dots, with a precise 6mm spacing, was burnt into them in order to reduce radiation transmission even further.

The need for both exceptional thermal performance and a product that was compatible with the building’s curved IGUs made Super Spacer® TriSeal™ Flex an obvious choice, as Edgetech Managing Director Chris Alderson explains.

GGF LAUNCHES DEPOSIT PROTECTION INSURANCE

The GGF is pleased to announce that it is launching a new Deposit Protection Insurance product to help GGF Members provide deposit protection to their customers.

Due to the Government restrictions imposed in March and brought on by the COVID-19 outbreak in the UK and effective lockdown of many sectors in the supply chain, the GGF Fund was closed to new business as insurers viewed the industry as high-risk.

John Agnew, GGF Managing Director commented, “On the opening day of Members’ Week in September, I announced the headline details of this product which I believe will be of great advantage to our members. This new Insurance product will be fully launched and promoted to GGF Members in November.”

The new scheme is an insurance based product that will be administered by Installsure (formerly GGFi), on behalf of the GGF. The scheme and insurance products are not compulsory for GGF Members but companies that sign up to using it will have to undergo a risk assessment for acceptance.

The New GGF Deposit Protection Insurance Details

The policies under the new insurance scheme are as follows:

  • Deposit Cover: means 25% of the actual contract value or £6,250 or the actual deposit paid, whichever is the lesser.
  • Duration: means 90 days (extensions may be available by referral with an additional premium).
  • Pricing is £5.60 (including IPT) per contract.
  • There may be a limit on the number of Deposit Protection Insurance products that a GGF Member can hold at any one time.
  • Products covered are Windows & Doors
  • The business and the installation address must be based in the UK.

Alternative cover is available depending on the outcome of the risk assessment.

GGF urges companies to “work safe” during latest lockdowns

The GGF is urging all companies and workers in the sector to make sure they not only stay safe but also work safe during the latest lockdown.

John Agnew, GGF Managing Director commented, “The latest lockdown restrictions will dramatically affect many sectors, and it is welcomed that the UK and Irish Governments are trying to keep pillars of the economy going and that includes manufacturing, construction and home improvement. Though this is positive for our sector, it is crucial that all companies and their employees adhere to the safe guidance available and take every practical and reasonable step to ensure that everyone stays safe in the workplace.”

In May, the GGF issued Safe Guides for installers and consumers as well as publishing the Site Operating Procedures for construction sites as well as manufacturing safe guidance. As the second wave rises, this guidance is still available for free download to all companies in the industry.

Lockdown 2 – How it affects Glass and Glazing

Over the last few days their have been announcements from the Central and the Devolved Governments of the UK.

The GGF contacted Central Government regarding the new restrictions following the Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s announcement of national lockdown in England from 5th November to 2nd December.

The Government replied to the GGF almost instantly confirming how the glass and glazing sector is impacted in England. The GGF also searched through all the latest guidance from the devolved Governments as well as the Republic of Ireland.

In general, our sector can remain open for business, there is the stark reminder that we need to ensure we operate safely and to the safe guidance. Here is the breakdown of the latest guidance and restrictions, as well as useful links to the key Government websites and GGF Safe Guides, should you need further information.   

In England:

  1. Tradespeople can continue to work in people’s homes as can salespeople and surveyors if necessary, but ideally if anyone can work remotely they should.  
  2. Door to door canvassing is still allowed but companies employing people to do this should make sure they are following the guidance, paying particular attention to remaining outdoors and at least 2m social distancing – note this may be affected by the local rules within the 3 tier guidance system
  3. Those who work in construction and manufacturing should continue to attend their workplaces and follow the Site Operating Procedures or work from home if possible
  4. Builders’ merchants and DIY stores can remain open (and will certainly be able to offer delivery or click and collect services) – although it should be borne in mind that there may be specific local rules relating to retail under the 3 Tier guidance system
  5. It is not confirmed yet whether showrooms can or cannot open. The list of non-essential retail premises that will have to close during the 4 week lockdown will be announced later this week.
  6. Government safety guidance must be adhered to when at work, and this is within the GGF Guidance Brochures for installers and consumers. Site Operating Procedures are also available from the GGF website.

Meanwhile,  there are no changes to the glass and glazing sector in Northern Ireland since First Minister Arlene Foster’s announcement on 13 October for a four-week circuit breaker lockdown.

In Northern Ireland

  1. Tradespeople can continue to work in people’s homes as can salespeople and surveyors if necessary, but ideally if anyone can work remotely they should.  
  2. Door to door canvassing is still allowed but companies employing people to do this should make sure they are following the guidance, paying particular attention to remaining outdoors and at least 2m social distancing – note this may be affected by the local rules within the 3 tier guidance system.
  3. Those who work in construction and manufacturing should continue to attend their workplaces and follow the Site Operating Procedures or work from home if possible.
  4. Builders’ merchants and DIY stores can remain open (and should certainly be able to offer delivery or click and collect services).
  5. Showrooms can remain open.
  6. Government safety guidance must be adhered to when at work, and this is within the GGF Guidance Brochures for installers and consumers. Site Operating Procedures are also available from the GGF website.

In Scotland

The Scottish 5 tier system to enforce tighter local restrictions was activated at 6.00am this morning 2 November. It is important to monitor what level your local area is in and review the guidance of what is permissible. This information is available here

Currently across Scotland;

  1. Tradespeople can continue to work in people’s homes as can salespeople and surveyors if necessary, but ideally if anyone can work remotely they should.  
  2. Door to door canvassing is still allowed but companies employing people to do this should make sure they are following the guidance, paying particular attention to remaining outdoors and at least 2m social distancing – note this may be affected by the local rules within the 5 tier guidance system.
  3. Those who work in construction and manufacturing should continue to attend their workplaces and follow the Site Operating Procedures or work from home if possible.
  4. Builders’ merchants and DIY stores can remain open (and should certainly be able to offer delivery or click and collect services).
  5. Showrooms can remain open but may be subject to change under local rules under the 5 tier guidance

In Wales

On 21 October, the Welsh Government updated their COVID restrictions with a view to these ‘firebreak’ restrictions lasting until 9th November. Due to the UK Government’s decision to increase English restrictions, the Welsh Government has had to respond and the First Minister, Mark Drakeford, will be giving further updates this week, although the plan is for the firebreak in Wales to end as planned on 9th November.

The Welsh government has updated its guidance with regard to working in other people’s home’s;

“Work carried out in people’s homes, for example by tradespeople, can continue as long as it is managed in a safe way and both the worker and household members are well and have no symptoms of coronavirus. However, we recommend that people consider whether the work can be safely deferred until after this short lockdown.”

Companies can continue to operate manufacturing plants and factories and work in other people’s homes however there should be a consideration to defer the work and if that is not possible then the work should be in line with COVID-19 guidelines.

In the Republic of Ireland

The Republic of Ireland entered Level 5 restrictions from midnight on Wednesday, 21st October. These restrictions are scheduled to end on 2nd December.

This has the below implications for working arrangements in Republic of Ireland.

General guidance

  • People should work from home unless they are delivering an essential service for which their physical presence is required.
  • Movement beyond a 5km radius of a person’s home is permitted when delivering essential services.
  • Employers that require individuals’ physical presence for delivering essential services, must ensure that workplaces meet current guidance.

Working in other people’s homes

  • Tradespeople may continue to enter other people’s homes to deliver maintenance and repair services. This is considered an essential service, according to the guidance.

Other workplaces

  • Construction is considered essential work, and all construction or development work and the provision of support services relating to construction and development work may continue.
  • Essential retail and essential services will remain open. This includes hardware outlets and builders’ merchants.
  • Manufacturing plants delivering products necessary for the supply chain of essential services will remain open. This includes such as manufacturers of glass and other glazing products.

State of the Trade? Here’s GGF Members Views

It’s been a quite unbelievable year and one that many hope never to see repeated but remarkably the glass and glazing industry is coming back despite the many setbacks in 2020. This mood for optimism was supported by the reports from GGF Members who attended recent regional and technical meetings and shared their views on the state of the trade. Here is a summary of their responses.

Retail Sector

The retail side has seen an increase in enquiries beyond expectation, leading to pressure on the estimating teams. The conversion rate seems to be lower but overall record sales being achieved.

General optimism for the future even with the supply chain delivery issues and Brexit.

Consumers seem to be largely understanding about supply issues leading to longer lead times but for some the “COVID excuse”, as they see it, is wearing a bit thin leading to frustration. Many Businesses now looking into 2021 with the expected hard stop of enquiries not happening at all.

Commercial Sector

The Commercial Sector also seems very buoyant but with the added complications of pressure to complete to deadlines. Many clients do not believe that the COVID pandemic is to blame for increased lead times and in some cases insist on proof, some even talking about time penalties.

The biggest challenge is supply chain deliveries with hardware being particularly affected.

System Houses

The Systems Houses are experiencing a particularly challenging time, with approx. five force majeure letters issued across the resin supply chain, leading to many system house material shortages over the past few months.

This coupled with an increase in demand that has far exceeded even the most optimistic of forecasts has put tremendous strain on supply. System Houses are working hard to increase their output where possible to not only meet demand but also to build back the stock levels that have been used up due to the high demand. There is an expectation that resin supply should be back to normal by November/December of this year. The biggest challenge then will be production to meet sales.

The System houses are seeing an increase in enquiries from members of the public as to why the installers are increasing lead times, almost as if they are checking what they have been told.

Other challenges

The recruitment of temporary workers was discussed and there does seem to be available skilled and semi-skilled workers. This shortage is affecting some areas more than others, the Midlands does seem to be particularly affected.

Managing customer expectations was also viewed as key to getting through these unprecedented times. Currently leads times are reported to be generally 12 weeks with even more time required for special foil items.

On hearing the views of GGF Members at numerous meetings in October, John Agnew, GGF Managing Director, commented, “It was very interesting to hear the positive views of our Members first-hand at GGF meetings via video. We have also received reports of different parts of the industry going through a “mini-boom” which is very encouraging as we are trying to recover from a quite incredible year. Let’s hope the green shoots of recovery continue but most importantly let’s hope everyone can stay safe whilst working through this pandemic.”

Environment Matters – Join the GGF Environment Committee

The GGF has formed an Environment Committee and is calling on those who work in or have an interest in environmental matters to join this new GGF committee.

Managing environmental impact is an ever-increasing demand for companies and recognizing this, the GGF wants to support Members on environmental issues and best practice.

The GGF Environment Committee will focus on driving improvement in the industry, increasing support for GGF Members, build connections with external stakeholders, but most importantly, it will give GGF Members a platform to air their views and concerns and feed into the GGF’s lobbying and ultimately potential new and changing Government legislation.  

Environmental management is something that some businesses may see as just another box to tick but it can bring numerous benefits such as;

  • Reducing  the risk of an environmental incident
  • A marketing advantage, in many tenders, Environmental management is often a fundamental requirement
  • An improvement in regulatory performance and therefore lower risk of fines for non-compliance with environmental legislation
  • A reduction in waste, including raw materials, utility waste, and waste disposal costs
  • The opportunity of attracting more customers, investors, and shareholders
  • Increased profits from lower costs
  • Attracting talent, environmental business is a huge plus for many of the younger talent joining the industry
  • Cost recovery, many times business can sell their waste to recover some of the costs

The GGF is looking for Members to join the Environment Committee and help us, help you.

If you have a member of your business that already has environment management in their job role or a team member that is passionate about environmental issues, or even if you have an interest in the environment then you are welcome to apply to join the environment committee. No previous direct experience is needed just an interest and some knowledge of environmental management and issues.

The Committee is formed of:

2 x representatives from the Home Improvement side of the membership.

2 x representatives from the Glazing/Glass Manufacturing/processing side of the membership.

2 x representatives from the regions/countries within the membership.

2 x co-opted external representatives from the environmental sector

Successful applicants should be prepared to attend four quarterly meetings (via video or physically) per year and if travelling to any meetings expenses will be paid in accordance with the GGF Expenses Guidelines.

On the formation of the Committee, John Agnew commented, “The environmental issues that affect our industry are huge and the GGF has to raise its profile and activity in this crucial area. I am delighted that we are moving in the right direction by forming this new committee.”

James MacPherson, GGF Health, Safety and Environment Manager added, “Environmental management is currently a huge challenge for many companies and by having its own Environment Committee, the GGF is clearly showing its commitment to tackling the environmental issues affecting the industry. As legislation and guidance changes, the GGF Environment Committee will not only be great platform for discussion but also a vital conduit for communication to our Members.”
