Everything you need to know about upgrading your conservatory or sunroom
Conservatories are a great way to introduce a new room to your home and let in natural light. They have also grown in popularity over the past year, due to many spending increasingly more time at home, resulting in these spaces shifting to pivotal family rooms/home office spaces.

For this very reason, maximising natural light and making your conservatory/sunroom comfortable has become more important than ever before.
Here are some tips to have front of mind if you’re considering revamping your existing space, for extra function and comfort.
Revamping your existing structure
Revamping your existing structure can be well worth the investment and not only increase the value of your home, but improve energy efficiency, while effectively managing the temperature in the space to ensure it’s warm in the winter and cool in the summer. There’s also the opportunity to increase the existing natural light, which can be done by installing skylights in your sunroom or upgrading your conservatory’s roof.
When discussing roof options with your local installer, consider the following; elevation of the conservatory (is it north or south facing?), ultraviolet (UV) rays reduction, solar heat rejection, visible glare reduction, insulation and ventilation. All of these factors contribute to your overall comfort levels so that your conservatory can be used in all seasons.
Temperature control
From overheating in the summer to being too cold in the winter, there are options available to make these rooms more comfortable all year round. But, can replacing the glazing on the roof really help?
The build-up of heat in conservatories can be an issue in traditional styles. For instance, when polycarbonate or insulating glass units (IGUs) are used in the roof they generally do not have any solar control properties. Although the IGUs may contain low emissivity glass for thermal performance, they will not substantially reduce the heat entering the home through the glass which is a major factor in causing heat build-up. Changing your roof panels to specialised solar control IGUs will certainly reduce that problem. Dependent on your location and exposure to sunlight it may be necessary to supplement this with internal blinds or air conditioning.
Price and timing
Price of the project will depend on the size and the products chosen. While timing is very much contingent on the project size and type, as well as potential accessibility and planning issues.
Many also believe that changing the roof is a messy process, but like all renovations, there will be some mess in the removal of old products but nothing unusual.
Latest trends
One trend we’ve really seen grow in prominence in recent years and continues to be popular is Scandi style. Scandi style has become synonymous with positive wellbeing, thanks to the light and clean colours, natural light and minimalist, simplistic design which really form this look.
We’ve also seen a growing trend for bringing the outdoors in, which can be a great way to create an indoor relaxing oasis that can be used all year round. Again, natural light is essential here and bi-folding sliding doors can be a great way to seamlessly bring outdoor and indoor space together.
For wellbeing, lifestyle, health, energy savings and to increase the value of your home, upgrading an old conservatory/sunroom can certainly be well worth the investment.

GGF gets HMRC clarification on reverse VAT charge
The GGF recently contacted the government department HMRC (Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs) for clarification on the exemptions for the reverse vat charge under the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS).
In the initial GGF letter to HMRC, the Federation asked for assistance and clarification with the recent changes in the CIS, in particular reverse charges to Value Added Tax (VAT) for contractors and subcontractors (CIS 340).
These type of companies have always been exempt from the CIS, but under the recent changes brought about after 6th April 2021, Building Firms, Main Contractors and some Customers are now operating the reverse charge of VAT with many sub-contractors throughout the UK.
It has resulted in many main contractors automatically making deductions from invoices without fully understanding the context of the scheme with regards to exemptions.
GGF Members have become increasingly frustrated that many of the main contractors are not following these exemption guidelines and just clustering all sub-contractors together and as such asked the GGF to contact HMRC for clarification.
On the 13th August HMRC replied to the GGF to confirm the following categories are out of scope of the CIS and should therefore not be subject to the reverse VAT charge. Please see exclusions below.
Operations excluded:
- manufacture or offsite fabrication of components or equipment, materials, plant or machinery and delivery of these to the site – for example:
- traditional building materials including components of windows/doors and conservatories
- manufacture, delivery, repair, servicing or maintenance of these items:
- fire protection works including Fire Resistant Glazing
- manufacture and delivery of:
- glazing materials including all components of windows/doors and conservatories
- manufacture and installation of solar, blackout or anti-shatter film

7 ways to stay cool in your home
Winter may well be coming, but summer is here! As the mercury rises we look at some simple ways you can stay cool and comfortable at home this summer.
1. Get the air flowing
On a warm and stuffy day, a breeze can be a lifeline. Luckily it’s one of the simplest things to create – simply open some windows or doors! Whether you have casements, tilt and turn or sash windows, French doors or wide-opening bifolds – even cracking these open a tiny bit can make a difference. If you’re worried about security at night, window locks can keep windows secure while allowing you to benefit from a cooling breeze.
For added effectiveness, strategically open windows or doors on opposite sides of your home. This should set up a corridor of airflow, getting the air moving and provide some cooling relief. It will also provide a healthy dose of ventilation for your home, helping to vent airborne pollutants and moisture, and bringing in clean, fresh air.
2. Throw some shade
Retreating to the shade is a perfect way to stay cool in your home. Using conservatory, door and window blinds and shutters during the warmer months can help keep your living spaces comfortable.
While the evenings may be nice and cool, if your home has spent the day warming up in the sun it can be tough coming home to a virtual greenhouse each night.
During the warmest hours, you can achieve more effective temperature control with blinds and shutters so come the end of the day, you can relax and enjoy the long summer evenings in comfort.
3. Can’t stand the heat? Cook something different…
When the temperature soars outside, anything you can do to keep it cool inside helps. The kitchen is a good place to start, and the oven and stovetop in particular are common culprits. Nothing beats the warmth and aromas emanating from an oven on a winter’s day… in summer however, this can make the kitchen and adjacent living spaces uncomfortably warm.
Where possible, look to limit how much you use heat producing appliances like the oven on warmer days. If you have a barbecue outside this is the perfect time to make the most of it – open up those patio doors and fire it up in the fresh air – or prepare cooler meals and ones that require less prolonged warming.
4. Open those trickle vents
Opening windows and doors is a good way to actively and rapidly ventilate your home. However don’t forget the benefits of passive ventilation – like that provided by trickle ventilators.
This kind of background ventilation can provide a home with a secure and constant source of ventilation even when windows are locked in a closed position.
5. Install energy efficient light bulbs
Light bulbs give off heat as well as light, so switching to ones that radiate less of the former can make a difference. Energy efficient bulbs such as fluorescent and LED light bulbs generate significantly less heat than incandescent bulbs. If your house has more than a few of the latter, changing to eco-friendly bulbs could be a good idea.
Doing so could even save you money in the long term. According to Energy Saving Trust, by replacing all bulbs in your home with LED alternatives you could save around £35 a year on electricity bills.
6. Retrofit window film
Rooms with a high proportion of glazing – such as conservatories and orangeries – can be susceptible to overheating in summer. If this is a problem for you, you may want to consider window film as a potential solution.
Specialised solar control window film can help to dramatically decrease heat transfer across windows, keeping rooms cooler and reducing glare from the sun. This can increase comfort and can also be beneficial for furniture positioned next to windows or doors, which is often at risk of fading over time from exposure to UV radiation.

7. Is it time to upgrade your windows?
If your home is overheating this summer, one of the reasons could be that your windows aren’t providing enough thermal insulation.
Normally when we think about energy efficient glazing such as double or triple glazed windows, we think about its ability to keep warmth inside a home and the cold out. Yet the same insulating properties that make this possible also help to reduce the impact of hot outside temperatures by keeping warm air out and the air inside a home cool.
Upgrading the windows in your home can lead to better thermal insulation, as well as reduced noise pollution and a more comfortable living environment. It can also help to lower your overall energy usage and fuel bills.
Talk to a local GGF Member company about how upgrading your windows could help improve the comfort of your home.
