Fire safety top of the GGF agenda for 2019

Fire safety will be central to the GGF’s activities in 2019 as the Federation prepares to increase its work educating and informing about best practice in fire resistant glazing.

Since the Grenfell tragedy in 2017, fire safety in construction has come under increased scrutiny. As the leading trade body for the industry, the Glass and Glazing Federation has been proactive on both the technical and political fronts.

In 2019, however, the GGF is planning a to significantly boost its fire safety related activity as Adrian Blaydon, Steve Bond and Kevin Buckley explain below.

We are planning to do more in 2019, to educate and inform key audiences on fire safety, both in terms of the importance of product performance and ensuring correct installation.

In June this year the GGF launched its newly revised edition of A Guide to Best Practice in the Specification and Use of Fire-Resistant Glazed Systems, which takes the reader through the fundamentals of fire resistant glazing.

This Guide is one of the most used GGF technical publications and that comes as no surprise as the industry is seeking high quality information to ensure they are using and applying the appropriate fire resistant glazing systems.

This year the GGF also exhibited at FIREX International – the trade show that promotes fire safety to a broad audience of architects, specifiers, building managers and fire safety officers.

For FIREX 2019, the GGF has secured 50% more space at this high profile exhibition and plans to once again exhibit fire damaged products to show how an actual fire event affects glass.

In addition the Federation will have a presentation slot and a video demonstration showing the performance of fire resistant glazing during a fire.

These are challenging and interesting times for fire safety. The subject of fire resistance within construction has been a highly focussed topic and it is good to see the GGF put the appropriate resource behind fire safety.

When it comes to potentially life threatening situations, all those responsible for fire safety should be fully aware of how fire resistant glazing reduces the risk and can limit the harm to life and property.

Fire safety is one of our main political campaigns in 2019. This year and since Grenfell we have been at the forefront of meetings, workshops and events with various groups, committees and government.

GGF and FENSA prepare for major industry awards events

The GGF and FENSA are preparing for a big week with not one but two major industry awards events taking place – here’s a preview of what’s to come.

Construction Marketing Awards 2018

On Thursday 29 November, the Construction Marketing Awards takes place at Bankside Hilton in London and the GGF and MyGlazing.com have been shortlisted as finalists in three categories.

The GGF’s 40th Anniversary Campaign in 2017 has been nominated in the “Best use of Research and Insight” category, while the Federation’s consumer website MyGlazing.com (in conjunction with Refresh PR) has been nominated for the “Best Use of Press and PR” and the “Best Mid-Budget Campaign”.

The Construction Marketing Awards is an annual event that showcases creativity, innovation and effectiveness in marketing across the entire construction industry, so being a nominated finalist in three categories is in itself, a great recognition for not just the GGF but for the glass and glazing industry.

G18 Awards

On Friday 30th November, the prestigious G18 Awards takes place at Park Lane Hilton with both the GGF and FENSA sponsoring the industry’s “Oscars”.

The GGF and FENSA have been long time supporters of the G Awards and this year both companies are sponsoring specific categories: the GGF are awarding the “Glass Company of the Year” and FENSA is presenting the “Installer of the Year” category.

Following its success in G17, FENSA for the second successive year will also present the “Installation of the Year” trophy to the FENSA installer that has received the best and most homeowners’ customer satisfaction feedback from FENSA’s post-installation inspections.

Winning or not, the awards evenings give the entire industry a great boost and the GGF and FENSA are looking forward to seeing excellence recognised and rewarded.

Both the GGF and FENSA wish all entrants to the G18 Awards the best of luck.

GGF responds to Safeglaze closure

Following the announcement of Safeglaze going into administration, Kevin Buckley, Group Chief Executive of the Glass and Glazing Federation, has issued a statement to clarify that Safeglaze was not in any way connected to the GGF and/or its group of commercial companies and to underline the importance of consumer protection when administration or liquidation occurs.

It is always unfortunate to witness the failure of any business within the glass and glazing industry – and doubly so when it is the closure of a large, high-profile business such as Safeglaze.

Even though Safeglaze was neither a GGF Member nor a FENSA registered company, the GGF Group still sympathise with the individuals who may have been affected including employees who have lost their jobs, suppliers who may have suffered financially and homeowners who have possibly been left without any deposit protection or insurance backed guarantees.

Recent media coverage would indicate that a number of current and future Safeglaze customers are in a state of confusion and are concerned as to where they stand with regards to their guarantees, paid deposits and incomplete installations.

We understand that Safeglaze was part of other trade organisations and we hope their customers will be protected and supported through this catastrophic period.

As the leading trade association to the glazing industry, the GGF appreciates that economic uncertainty can affect businesses both large and small. The GGF and its commercial companies often meet with Members and clients to listen to their concerns and to offer help where possible to ensure they continue to run their businesses effectively.

It is important to mention our unrivalled support to thousands of companies connected to the GGF Group. The examples below underline our commitment to consumer facing companies.

  • All GGF Member installers have been trading for a minimum of 3 years – there are no phoenix companies in the GGF.
  • All GGF Members and FENSA registered companies have been vetted and have premises, products and employees fit for purpose.
  • GGF consumer-facing companies comply with the GGF Consumer Code of Practice, which is approved by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute and has strict requirements regarding the conduct of Member companies ensuring they comply with all relevant consumer legislation.
  • Homeowners using GGF Members have free access to the GGF Conciliation Service in the unlikely event of a dispute with a GGF Member company.
  • The Glazing Arbitration Scheme (TGAS) is also in place to help GGF Members and FENSA companies reach resolutions with homeowners.
  • All GGF Members and FENSA registered companies must offer their customers a warranty insurance policy (insurance backed guarantees) to protect the homeowner in the event that the installation company fails.
  • GGF Members offer homeowners free automatic deposit protection using the GGF Deposit Indemnity Fund which was set up in 1981 and is now the industry’s best deposit protection safeguarding deposits and instalments of up to 50% of the contract value or £12,500 (whichever is lesser).
  • All FENSA and GGF installers are trained to MTC (Minimum Technical Competency) level to ensure installations are fitted to the standards set in Building Regulations.

 

These are just some of the main benefits offered by GGF Members and FENSA companies that clearly demonstrate the value of homeowner protection.

We advise all homeowners looking to have glazing work carried out at their home, to thoroughly check the credentials of any firm they are looking to employ and to check what (if any) trade bodies they are registered with. We also recommend that homeowners make sure they are using a recognised Competent Person Scheme such as FENSA and to obtain protection for both guarantees and any deposits paid, to ensure they are protected, should the worst happen.

In the meantime, in order to determine the best avenue for recourse and raise any concerns regarding the closure, we advise Safeglaze customers to contact the relevant associations/schemes to whom Safeglaze were affiliated with and used to offer their customers protection.

Glasstec proves successful for GGF

The GGF had a busy and productive exhibition at glasstec Dusseldorf recently, engaging with hundreds of industry contacts over the four day trade show.

At glasstec, approximately 200 guests (including Members, Visitors, non-members and media) were offered information and technical guidance as well as corporate hospitality on the GGF stand.

John Agnew, GGF President commented, “It was a pleasure to be part of the GGF team at glasstec. It is a show that attracts all the major players in the glass industry and the GGF presence and engagement at this event is great for raising the Federation’s profile.”

Steve Rice, Director of Technical Affairs commented, “Glasstec proved a great success. It was great to meet so many GGF Members and thanks to all those who visited us during the show. It was also encouraging to have many companies asking about how they could join, work with or use the GGF technical services.”

Glasstec celebrated its 25th anniversary this year and it cemented its position as the leading trade fair and premiere platform for the international glass sector. On the four trade fair days from 23 to 26 October more than 42,000 visitors from over 120 countries came to Düsseldorf to witness first-hand the innovative power of the industry. 1,280 exhibitors from 50 countries showcased their product highlights in nine halls.

With a multi-conference programme at the show, the special show glass technology live once again proved the central point of contact for all glasstec visitors presenting itself in a fresh new look for the anniversary event. By extending the team of conceptual partners to include not one but four Technical Universities, the organisers placed a stronger focus on scientific glass research that put exciting glass products and applications on display. The focal themes staged by glass technology live included interactive façades and display glass, energy and performance, structural glass (solid glass, thin glass and hollow glass) as well as new technologies.

Glasstec is already planning for the 2020 show and the GGF is working with the organisers to increase the UK presence at the world’s largest trade fair for the glass industry.

Our newly launched GGF Accredited Installer and Surveyor Training courses are proving popular with attendees and we’ve now announced our first training dates for 2019.

Following the success of the recently launched training courses aimed at improving the quality of work delivered by installers and surveyors, the GGF is getting ready for the next round of courses taking place in December with places now available for booking.

The need for hands on practical training has been highlighted by GGF Members and the GGF have responded with two unique courses for installers and surveyors. Feedback from participants on the initial courses has been very positive:

FENSA enjoys successful Roadshows

The last few months have been busy times for the FENSA team as they visited six locations bringing the FENSA Roadshows to scores of companies in the South West and North West of England.

Chris Beedel, FENSA Director of Membership commented, “It has been absolutely great to meet so many FENSA registered companies and share information and dialogue that can only benefit their businesses. My thanks go to all those who attended and to the FENSA team who made it so successful.”

The FENSA Roadshows provided a unique opportunity for companies to visit a local venue and learn how FENSA operates, how it can help their business and ask any questions directly to the FENSA team.

Each Roadshow event took place in the early evenings across several locations including: Bristol, Torquay, Cornwall, Liverpool, Manchester and Blackpool.

The Roadshows consisted of expert presentations on inspections, certification, skills and MTC (Minimum Technical Competence), building regulations and other topical issues affecting installers such as the recent composite fire door changes post-Grenfell.

FENSA took its “Installation of the Year” Trophy on the road. Following thousands of entries and hundreds of companies in the running to win the prestigious prize, the winner will be announced at the G18 Awards at Park Lane Hilton on 30th November.

Chris Beedel added, “After six successful Roadshows we are now looking forward to the G18 Awards and the Installation of the Year Award. This year has been a very special one for FENSA. We celebrated our 16th birthday, we recorded our 13 millionth installation and increased membership to over 6000 installer companies. However, the good news for all connected to FENSA is that we are now planning for an even bigger year in 2019. Watch this space!”

GGF renews political partnership with GK Strategy

The GGF is pleased to announce that it has renewed its partnership with GK Strategy to deliver its campaigns in 2019.

In 2017, the GGF set up its Group Political Strategy Committee to refine its political planning and to re-focus on key campaigns.

GK Strategy were first appointed by the GGF in 2010 to deliver a long term campaign aimed at positioning  the need for more government home improvement schemes to include energy efficient windows and doors. Since then GK have been instrumental in lobbying campaigns regarding fire safety, training, security glazing and energy efficiency.

GK Strategy is a full-service strategic communications consultancy which was recently shortlisted for PRCA Public Affairs Agency of the Year, after winning the award in 2015. The agency brings clients a strategic advisory team which includes former Chair of British Venture Capital Association, Tim Farazmand and David Laws, former Minister of State for Schools and a cabinet minister during the 2010-2015 Coalition Government.

On the appointment, Kevin Buckley, GGF Chief Executive commented, “We are pleased to re-appoint GK to help us with our political campaigns in 2019. With their lobbying expertise, political contacts and their in-depth knowledge of the political system, they will be invaluable to our political plans next year.”

Emma Petela, GK Director, added, “GK is delighted to continue as the political advisers to the GGF and we are looking forward to working with the GGF and its subsidiaries on various campaigns in 2019.”

Insurance Backed Guarantee (IBG) provider GGFi has introduced a new online application process designed to make it easier for businesses to apply to use its warranty insurance services

The new Apply Online feature was developed in response to customer feedback and in collaboration with fellow GGF Group company Borough IT. It presents a clear, user-friendly and above all quick way for installation businesses to submit their applications to GGFi.

Head of Operations Frank Allain said: “Personally, I’m hugely excited to finally be able to unveil this piece of software. We’ve listened to our customers, taken that feedback on board and worked very closely with our colleagues in Borough IT to create something that will only improve the experience of prospective clients.”

CMAs: GGF and MyGlazing.com shortlisted

The GGF and MyGlazing.com have been shortlisted as finalists in three categories for the Construction Marketing Awards, the annual event that showcases creativity, innovation and effectiveness in marketing across the construction industry.

The GGF’s 40th Anniversary Campaign in 2017 has been nominated in the “Best use of Research and Insight” Category, while the Federation’s consumer website MyGlazing.com (in conjunction with Refresh PR) has been nominated for the “Best Use of Press and PR” and the “Best Mid-Budget Campaign”.

On hearing of the nominations, James Lee, Director of GGF Group Marketing and Communications, commented, “I am delighted that the GGF, MyGlazing.com and our PR agency Refresh PR, have been recognised and are in the running for these awards.”

The GGF’s 40th Anniversary campaign entailed extensive research that trawled the GGF’s archives with some of the reference books going back over 200 years of trade bodies in the glass industry. From the research, the GGF produced a timeline starting from 1328 and London’s Guild of Glaziers (the industry’s first know trade body) right through to 2017 and the GGF’s position in the industry as the leading trade organisation for the last 40 years.

James Lee continued, “The in-depth research was an important element for the full blown campaign because we created an easy to follow road map of our industry and it showed why the GGF has become the main trade body for the industry.”

Refresh PR were appointed the GGF’s consumer PR agency in 2015 and have since help grow the awareness and interest in MyGlazing.com (the GGF’s consumer website).

Laura Mashiter, managing director of Refresh PR, added: “We are delighted to have worked with the GGF on the MyGlazing.com campaign since 2015. We’re thrilled it has been shortlisted in two categories alongside many high calibre entries. In Window with a View’s third year, we’re delighted that it continues to deliver great results for MyGlazing.com – we’re excited to make the competition even bigger and better next year!”

Through the unique Window with a View completion, Refresh has helped the GGF and MyGlazing.com achieve over 25 million viewing opportunities in the consumer media. In addition, MyGlazing.com has recently surpassed 500,000 users since it was first launched in September 2015 and is on target to reach one million page views in February 2019.

GGF Technical team all set for glasstec 2018 in Dusseldorf

The GGF is ready for the 25th glasstec Trade Fair, to be held in Dusseldorf from 23-26 October.

Glasstec provides a unique international platform for the GGF technical team who are preparing for a week of offering technical advice, product testing demonstration and corporate hospitality at the glass industry’s largest exhibition.

With over 1200 exhibitors from 52 countries, glasstec attracts over 40,000 international visitors as the show highlights the unlimited variety of possibilities of glass applications. Nowhere else is the potential of glass as a high-tech construction material presented in such a comprehensive fashion.

GGF Group company Borough IT has launched a new part of its website aimed at keeping its clients informed and entertained – Rob’s Blog, written by the company’s own Rob Saunders.

Rob’s Blog is to be a fortnightly platform for Borough IT Business Development Manager Rob Saunders. The new column will offer a fresh perspective on Borough IT’s communications as Rob sharing opinions, hints, guidance and even some of his leisure pursuits.

FENSA is hitting the road this September, October and November to bring its free and info-packed roadshows to FENSA installers throughout the South West and North West.

FENSA works with thousands of double glazing contractors in England and Wales that have been assessed for their ability to install replacement windows and doors in accordance with the relevant Building Regulations.

Member installers can self-certify compliance under the Building Regulations without the need for a separate assessment from Building Control.

Since being established in 2002 FENSA has grown to become the largest and longest established Competent Person Scheme within the replacement window and door industry, recently issuing its 13 millionth homeowner certificate.

Now FENSA members have the chance to meet the FENSA team in person at their local FENSA Roadshow event and get valuable updates, insights and inspections advice.

New GGF training courses for installers and surveyors

The GGF has launched two new training programmes for installers and surveyors with a particular focus on quality delivery.

In recent years there has been a view in the industry that the quality of finish has been in decline. Indeed, a high proportion of the conciliation cases brought to the GGF relate to the lack of quality in all its aspects.

This is costly for the business in putting things right for the customer and in the loss of reputation and referrals. It is therefore essential that training solutions are in place to provide both GGF Members and Non Members the opportunity to enhance their skills with a focus on quality of workmanship and finish.

To this end the Glass and Glazing Federation has launched two new training programmes aimed at glazing professionals who already have some experience in the sector but wish to hone their skills with a particular focus on quality delivery.

As is to be expected of training delivered by the GGF, the focus of our new Installer Training and Surveyor Training courses is quality delivery, customer satisfaction and a professional approach to business.

The course outlines are based on a modular programme and will be delivered by a GGF industry expert. Installer training is delivered over one or two days depending on the level of detail required, while surveyor training is delivered over one day.

Alternatively, individual ‘top up’ modules can be selected in areas where there are identified skills gaps. With a maximum of 12 delegates per course, we are now taking bookings for what we expect to be popular courses.

Maurice Anders – Tribute to a GGF Founder Member

The GGF was saddened to hear of the recent passing of Maurice Anders of T. A. Anders & Co Ltd, a Founder Member of the Federation.

Maurice was 91 when he passed away, having worked in the glass industry all his life. He went straight into the business on leaving school during the war, following the death of his father who had established T. A. Anders & Co in 1931 after leaving Pilkington Glass.

The family were from St Helens and it is believed there were members of the Anders family working at Pilkington Bros since the 1840s. When Maurice joined the business was located in Rusholme, Manchester.

Maurice met his wife to be, Jean, whilst an apprentice at R H Armstrong in Salford in 1944 and together they moved the business to railway arches in Manchester city centre in the early 1950s and then to Liverpool Street, Salford in 1959.

Following the announcement that a new underground railway would be built running practically below the factory, Maurice had to move once more and this time to Frederick Road on the site of his and Jean’s former employer, R H Armstrong, in 1986. Here the business remained until 2017 when, despite being in his ninetieth year, Maurice was still taking an active interest.

Having been involved in the Plate Glass Association (PGA) and the Flat Glass Council (FGC) and then Glass and Glazing Federation, he continued to play an active role well into his eighties, attending meetings in London and until recently still making an appearance at the annual Glassman’s Lunch.

Even into his nineties he would come to T. A. Anders’ new premises on Guinness Road, Trafford Park, to dispense his wisdom, sage advice, sharp (and dry) wit to others and all who met him were keen to listen.

Peter Stuttard, GGF Regional Manager who knew Maurice well, commented, “Maurice was a true gentleman and will be very sorely missed by so many, my sincere sympathies go to his family and friends.”

Steve Rice, GGF Director of Technical Affairs, added, “I was very sad to hear the news of Maurice’s passing, a loyal GGF Member and a great industry man, but most importantly a truly great person. My thoughts are with his family at this time.”

The GGF on behalf of its staff and Members sends sincere condolences to the Anders family at this difficult time.

Whether it’s replacing old windows and doors or having a sunlight-filled conservatory or orangery installed on your property, glazing professionals can help you improve your home in countless ways – and gains in energy efficiency are just some of the many potential benefits.

However just as with any company that provides goods or services, from time to time it may occur that a dispute arises between a homeowner and a glazing company.

What if this happens to you? What is the best way to proceed? And what complaint resolution processes are available to you? We’ve put together a quick guide on how to make your way from complaint to resolution with a glazing company.

1. Make the company aware of the issue

If you have concerns about glazing work carried out in your home, it is best to first communicate these directly to the company that carried out the work.

While the exact complaints procedure may differ depending on the company, in general a channel should exist that allows you to raise your issue formally and then expect a response on the part of the company within a reasonable time frame.

If you choose a GGF Member company you can be assured it has an effective complaints handling system.

Members of the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) that sell products and/or services directly to domestic consumers are required by the GGF Consumer Code of Practice to have an effective complaints handling system.

That means homeowners can be confident that GGF Members will initially respond to or acknowledge any consumer complaint within two weeks of the complaint being received.

2. Keep a record of your communications

We recommend keeping a log of each time you contact the company, starting when you first bring the issue to its attention and continuing throughout any subsequent exchanges.

If you are unsure how to initially raise your complaint, talking to a company representative in person or on the phone is a good place to start. This should allow you to either raise your issue directly there and then, or learn the appropriate procedure for formalising your complaint.

When this isn’t possible, you should be able to find information on a company’s complaints procedure on its website. If the company doesn’t have a website and there is no indication of an official complaints resolution procedure, write it a letter setting out the specifics of your complaint.

3. If you can’t reach a resolution with the company

If you believe you aren’t being heard or feel the complaint you have raised is being ignored by the company that carried out the work, you may need to pursue alternative forms of dispute resolution.

If your dispute is with a GGF Member company, you can apply to the free GGF Conciliation Service.

The GGF Conciliation Service is an independent and impartial dispute resolution procedure available exclusively to customers of GGF Member companies.

Its overriding principle is to ensure GGF Members meet their contractual responsibilities to their customers.

The GGF Conciliation Officer endeavours to keep all parties informed so as to create a situation whereby a mutually agreed solution to an existing dispute is reached.

4. For non-glazing related disputes

If you have a non-glazing dispute with a company, MyGlazing.com recommends contacting Citizens Advice.

The Citizens Advice consumer service provides free, confidential and impartial advice on consumer issues, including information about your rights when buying goods and services.
