The GGF is pleased to announce that a newly joined Member of the Federation, Slimline Glazing Systems Ltd, has attained Bronze Level 2 in the GLASS Charter Merit Scheme.

At this year’s GGF Members’ Day in Solihull, GGF Group CEO Kevin Buckley presented Abigail Chapman, Quality & Compliance Manager and Company Secretary at Slimline Glazing Systems Ltd, with the GLASS Charter Bronze Level 2 Certificate.

The evidence provided during their audit clearly showed they are a company that recognises the importance of health and safety for their employees. Slimline Glazing is very keen to develop by working on specific areas such as physical and mental wellbeing.

History of the GGF GLASS Charter Merit Scheme

In 2001 the glass industry took up the Government’s Revitalising Health and Safety Initiative. In partnership with both industry and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the Glass and Glazing Federation launched the GLASS (Goal: Less Accidents, Safer Sites) Charter Merit Scheme.

In 2016, the scheme was relaunched in line with the Health and Safety Executive’s five year strategy. The GLASS Charter Merit Scheme aims to improve Health and Safety performance in all sectors by providing best practice guidelines, advice and actively encouraging industry to take up the challenge of improving Health and Safety performance whilst embracing innovation.

How to make a complaint about glazing work in your home

Problem with your window installation? Issues with a new conservatory or doorset? Read our advice on how to resolve a dispute with a glazing company.

Whether it’s replacing old windows and doors or having a sunlight-filled conservatory or orangery installed on your property, glazing professionals can help you improve your home in countless ways – and gains in energy efficiency are just some of the many potential benefits.

However just as with any company that provides goods or services, from time to time it may occur that a dispute arises between a homeowner and a glazing company.

What if this happens to you? What is the best way to proceed? And what complaint resolution processes are available to you? We’ve put together a quick guide on how to make your way from complaint to resolution with a glazing company.

1. Make the company aware of the issue

If you have concerns about glazing work carried out in your home, it is best to first communicate these directly to the company that carried out the work.

While the exact complaints procedure may differ depending on the company, in general a channel should exist that allows you to raise your issue formally and then expect a response on the part of the company within a reasonable time frame.

If you choose a GGF Member company you can be assured it has an effective complaints handling system.

Members of the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) that sell products and/or services directly to domestic consumers are required by the GGF Consumer Code of Practice to have an effective complaints handling system.

That means homeowners can be confident that GGF Members will initially respond to or acknowledge any consumer complaint within two weeks of the complaint being received.

2. Keep a record of your communications

We recommend keeping a log of each time you contact the company, starting when you first bring the issue to its attention and continuing throughout any subsequent exchanges.

If you are unsure how to initially raise your complaint, talking to a company representative in person or on the phone is a good place to start. This should allow you to either raise your issue directly there and then, or learn the appropriate procedure for formalising your complaint.

When this isn’t possible, you should be able to find information on a company’s complaints procedure on its website. If the company doesn’t have a website and there is no indication of an official complaints resolution procedure, write it a letter setting out the specifics of your complaint.

3. If you can’t reach a resolution with the company

If you believe you aren’t being heard or feel the complaint you have raised is being ignored by the company that carried out the work, you may need to pursue alternative forms of dispute resolution.

If your dispute is with a GGF Member company, you can apply to the free GGF Conciliation Service.

The GGF Conciliation Service is an independent and impartial dispute resolution procedure available exclusively to customers of GGF Member companies.

Its overriding principle is to ensure GGF Members meet their contractual responsibilities to their customers.

The GGF Conciliation Officer endeavours to keep all parties informed so as to create a situation whereby a mutually agreed solution to an existing dispute is reached.

4. For non-glazing related disputes

If you have a non-glazing dispute with a company, MyGlazing.com recommends contacting Citizens Advice.

The Citizens Advice consumer service provides free, confidential and impartial advice on consumer issues, including information about your rights when buying goods and services.

Lancing Glass Works receives GGF Founder Member award

We recently visited Lancing Glass Works to present their team with a special award recognising four decades – and counting – of continuous GGF Membership.

GGF Member Lancing Glass Works specialises in the supply and installation of double glazed windows and conservatories for domestic and commercial customers, as well as a wide range of replacement doors, splashbacks for the kitchen and mirrors. Based in Lancing, it covers all areas throughout Sussex including Worthing and Brighton.

The company was started by current Managing Director Mark Goldsmith’s stepfather in 1972 and when the Glass and Glazing Federation was formed in 1977, Lancing Glass Works became one of its original Members.

Celebrating our Founder Members

As part of the Federation’s 40th Anniversary celebrations in 2017, we held a special event to recognise those that have been with us since day one – our Founder Members.

We were glad to be joined by representatives of many of our Founder Members on the day, however as some companies were unable to attend we’re making sure to deliver their special awards in person.

Richard Hearn, GGF Head of Membership and Training, recently visited the team at Lancing Glass Works and presented Managing Director Mark Goldsmith and Director Tony Jefferson with their GGF Founder Member award.

Speaking from the company’s premises where thank-you letters from satisfied customers are proudly displayed, Mark said, “It was a real pleasure to receive this award and a real honour to receive this from the Glass and Glazing Federation.”

Mark explained that the majority of their business comes from customer referrals and this year has been very busy. He added, “We have a great team who continuously support our customers to give them the best possible service.”

GGF Member recognised for milestone FENSA installation

A GGF Member company has been recognised for the unique role it played in helping FENSA register an unprecedented 13 millionth installation earlier this year.

DG Solutions draws on a range of PVCu windows, doors, porches, conservatories and roofline products as well as a wealth of industry experience to deliver bespoke solutions for its clients.

The GGF Member company has offices across the South of England and this June it installed six windows and two doors at a property in Oxfordshire. Little did it know it had just completed the 13 millionth installation to be registered through the FENSA self-certification scheme for replacement doors and windows.

It was a highly anticipated milestone for FENSA and one celebrated as both symbolic of the great work done every day by its members and evidence of its status as the largest and longest serving Competent Person Scheme in the fenestration industry.

Recognition for a special installation

Anda Gregory, Managing Director of FENSA, visited the team at DG Solutions to present Business Manager Thomas Ward with a special certificate recognising his company’s landmark installation.

Anda commented, “I was delighted to meet DG Solutions and award our special Certificate of Achievement for carrying out the 13 millionth installation in FENSA’s history. It is recognition of the great work that both DG Solutions and FENSA do to ensure homeowners have their windows legally installed to high professional standards.”

Thomas said that it was marvellous to discover that DG Solutions had processed the lucky 13 millionth FENSA registration.

He commented, “This accolade is just the icing on the cake following a lot of hard work in the restructuring of our business model and product offering, which we hope will move the company to the next level.”

Reaping the rewards of FENSA membership

DG Solutions has more than 30 years’ experience in the replacement window and door industry and has built a strong reputation by delivering excellent customer service alongside an extensive range of products and services.

Though a FENSA installer since 2012, the company continues to discover new ways to benefit from its FENSA membership.

Thomas explained, “We are now starting to take greater advantage of the free BFRC opt-in for FENSA members, meaning we can use our manufacturers’ energy rated products and brand them as our own rated products. I have no doubt this will give us a further edge in the market place.”

FENSA celebrates its members

For FENSA, the registration of 13 million installations over just sixteen years signals the efficacy of a scheme founded at the request of Government in 2002.

Chris Beedel, Director of Membership, commented, “This achievement highlights how successful the scheme has become in a relatively short period of time. It also shows the coverage and trust in the FENSA brand and the loyalty of FENSA members. We have 6000 installer companies who clearly want to maintain high industry standards by ensuring their homeowners have legally and professionally installed windows and doors.”

FENSA, a GGF Group company, was established as a Competent Person Scheme in response to Building Regulations for double glazing companies in England and Wales. As the market leader, FENSA is the largest and longest established Competent Person Scheme within the replacement window and door industry. Its role for FENSA members is to enable companies to self-certify compliance under the Building Regulations without the need for a separate assessment from Building Control.

Mark Austin elected GGF Vice-President

The GGF is pleased to announce that Mark Austin, Marketing Director of Hazlemere Windows, has been confirmed as GGF Vice-President by the GGF Board.

Mark, who is also the Chairman of the GGF Window and Door Group, was elected for the vice-presidency by his fellow members of the Home Improvement Executive and takes on the role with immediate effect. As Vice-President, Mark represents the Home Improvement side of the industry on the GGF Board.

Mark has a solid background in working with membership organisations. During his time working as a Director in the football industry (for Wycombe Wanderers and QPR), Mark was Chairman of the southern region of the Marketing Managers Association (MMA) and he has also chaired quarterly meetings of commercial managers from the Premier League, Championship, Leagues One & Two. As Chairman of the MMA, he also attended the national The Institute of Football Management & Administration (IFMA) quarterly executive meetings.

In 2008, Mark joined Hazlemere Window Company Ltd – a family owned and independently run double glazing manufacturer & installer of high quality bespoke aluminium windows, doors, conservatories, orangeries, brise soleil and curtain walling. The company also supplies and fits UPVC windows, doors, conservatories, orangeries and Roofline, along with roof lantern lights, secondary glazing and solid roof conservatories.

At Hazlemere Windows, Mark works in the Commercial Division doing Marketing for the Retail & Trade Division, along with promoting the Group’s six websites, plus its showrooms in High Wycombe and Welwyn Garden City.

On accepting the role of GGF Vice-President, Mark commented: “I am pleased to have been elected as GGF Vice-President and happy to represent and express Members’ interests and concerns across all the sectors within the industry. I would also encourage each member company to get the maximum from their GGF annual membership fee by ensuring they get a return on their investment through benefits such as networking at the numerous meetings and events the GGF organises all over the country. I’d also like to Members to take full advantage of all the marketing and PR tools offered free to Members via the members area on the new GGF website.”

In his role as Vice-President, Mark will support the current GGF President John Agnew until 31st December 2019 when John’s tenure expires. Both roles are purely voluntary ones, along with all the other elected Directors who sit on the GGF Board.

Mark summarised: “It is fairly well known that the GGF has had a lot of personnel changes over the last few years as it has been going through a restructuring and governance review. It now needs a period of stability, something I aim to assist with. There are now several new Directors on the GGF Board, blessed with decades of experience in the Glazing Industry, so with them and the rest of the dedicated volunteer elected GGF Directors I hope we can steer the GGF ship into less choppy waters and revitalise what is at heart a superb organisation with over 40 years of history.”

FENSA hits milestone with 13 millionth registered installation

FENSA is pleased to announce that long-term member DG Solutions has successfully completed the 13 millionth installation to be registered through the FENSA self-certification scheme.

DG Solutions is delighted to have completed the thirteen millionth FENSA installation since the Competent Person Scheme was founded in 2002 – a job which saw it install six windows and two doors at a property in Banbury, Oxfordshire this month.

Chris Beedel, Director of Membership, FENSA commented: “Thirteen million installations over sixteen years shows great success, not only of the Competent Persons Schemes and the ability for FENSA Members to self-certify their work against Building Regulations, but also the outreach and trust in the FENSA brand.”

Located in Ilford, DG Solutions has been a Member of FENSA since 2012 with years of experience in the replacement window and door industry. It has built a strong reputation by offering an extensive range of products and services.

Anda Gregory, GGF Managing Director, Commercial added: “We are delighted for DG Solutions to have installed the 13 millionth installation. It’s important when choosing an installer to make sure that they are a Member of a Competent Person Scheme and have the support of a strong brand like FENSA which is clearly one of the most trusted in the industry. To underline its position in the sector, DG Solutions has recently become a Member of the Glass and Glazing Federation and is also in the process of registering with GGFi for warranty insurance and the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC) for window energy ratings.

As a Member of BFRC, DG Solutions fit windows and doors that are now energy rated and carry a ‘rainbow’ label to provide an indication of their relative energy efficiency.

BLOG ARTICLE – TRIPLE GLAZING

KJM’s Managing Director Mark Pearce gives his personal views on Triple Glazing

In an age when energy prices are only heading in one direction, fitting your home with new KJM Veka 44mm Triple Glazed Windows can offer additional savings compared to standard ‘A’ rated double glazing. Well that’s the selling bit over and done with!

Triple glazed windows are still a relatively new concept in the UK. But in colder countries like Scandinavia, where homes endure extreme winter weather, they have been a standard fitment for many years. While we might not get the same severity of conditions, the UK does still suffer from harsh winters and of course increasing energy prices.

There are other ways to insulate your home like the roof, walls and floor, but neglecting your windows can result in cold spots and condensation. Personally I installed 44mm triple glazing in to my own home around three years ago and I have never looked back since then.

Some from within KJM would describe me as “KJM’s Triple Glazing King”, as I passionately believe in the product. I was even asked to speak at our national trade show about the benefits of triple glazing, but declined as it was over three days and in Telford, a long way from our base in Andover in Hampshire.

There are many benefits to installing triple glazing in your home but the important thing to remember is that all triple glazing is not the same. There are many systems available but to really get the maximum benefit then the gaps between the panes of glass should be 16mm and filled with argon gas.

Argon is an inert gas that reduces the heat loss through the panes. If the gap is reduced then the thermal performance is reduced, unless you start to use an expensive gas like krypton. So generally speaking the optimum size of a triple glazed sealed unit should be 4mm glass, 16mm gaps, so in our industry it’s called a 4/16/4/16/4 unit and that equals 44mm in total. You then need to factor in the number of chambers within the frame, the fewer chambers the less insulated the frame. The Veka system uses thermal inserts within the frame to improve the insulation further.

Are there any down-falls I hear you ask? The biggest problem I’ve encountered with my own windows would be external condensation on the glass. This happens because the external pane of glass is not being heated so well by your house, so if the glass drops to less in temperature than the outside air, then you reach “dew point” and condensation forms. It’s the exact reason that you get dew on your car windows. It will generally happen after a cold clear night and it would best be described as a light misting that forms from the centre of the pane, actually it’s in the complete opposite place it would form on the inside. This is because the glass in effect is being heated through the frame and spacer bar, so the outer edge of the glass is warmer than the centre.

When you get internal condensation it’s the opposite way, because in reverse the outer perimeter of the internal glass is the coldest. You can find that ‘A’ rated double glazing will suffer from the same problem, but the effects are much less. As I told my wife when she first spotted the external condensation “It just goes to show how well insulated our windows are”. They usually clear fairly quickly in the morning, so it certainly does not bother me. Further information on this can be found on this technical document from our glass supplier.

Light? Having three panes of glass, with two of them having a low e coating, there would be a drop in the natural light coming through the window as the low e coatings darken the glass slightly. Back to my own experience of my windows at home, from the old double glazing to the new triple glazing I did not notice any difference, so I expect this would only be detected with some some good light monitoring equipment.

Security? Three panes would have to be more secure than two, so there is an obvious difference. The middle pane of a triple glazed unit should be toughened especially if the glass faces a sunny elevation, at KJM we toughen all middle panes regardless of elevation. This helps with the stresses that occur with the heat build up within the sealed unit.

The next thing you might find on the internet about triple glazing is sound insulation. There is a lot of misinformation out there and many claim it improves sound insulation because they believe three panes are better than two. Scientific tests would show that if all three panes are the same thickness of glass then the benefit to sound insulation is very marginally better at best.

If you introduce one different thickness of pane, say one pane of 6mm glass and two panes of 4mm then this would improve the sound insulation more, because the different thicknesses will change the wave length of the sound as it passes through the window, thus reducing the sound transmittance. It would be worth pointing out at this stage that an open window will stop nothing and then there is my other pet-hate “trickle vents” that are notorious for leaking sound. That is a subject for another blog as there are better quality trickle vents on the market.

Extra weight from the glass is another problem, so oversized opening windows and doors are generally a “no-no” but traditional British casement window sizes have not produced a problem for KJM over the last few years, so we are confident in what we sell.

Finally did you know that you can buy the mainly recycled PVC system Veka Infinity in our triple glazing range? So if you really want to protect the environment then you can specify this system. Up to 80% of the core (the bits you don’t see) are made from recycled PVC, the important outside is manufactured from Virgin PVC in a very clever co-extruded process.

In summary I love triple glazing and I can see no reason why if you were changing your windows that you did not consider the option. Yes it costs more, but it will “future proof” your home and in the long term you will recoup your extra costs through the energy savings. It should also make your home much more attractive to potential buyers, if you decided to sell. At KJM it costs nothing to get a quotation and of course we can price for both ‘A’ rated double glazing and provide an additional upgrade cost to triple glazing.

STAY SECURED BY DESIGN WITH CENSOLUTIONS

CENSolutions celebrates 10 years in business this year, and while they are widely recognised as the leading consultancy and test facility for the window, door and glazing industries, they have no desire to rest on their laurels.

. Instead the company is continuously extending its scope. One of the things they are increasingly asked about is the recently amended PAS24:12 regulations and how companies can comply in order to keep selling Secured by Design.

Wayne Rogerson, Joint Managing Director explains: “PAS24:12 came into effect in September 2013, so if you wish to continue selling Secured by Design to the consumer, you should already be up to speed. The standard calls for all glazed doors and windows which have a non-locking handle to have at least one leaf of glass that achieves a P1A classification. Our research has found that this glass needs to be at least 6.8mm laminated. With regards to P1A, this is a classification within EN 356:200 for a drop height of 1500mm. In fairness 6.8mm laminated achieves P2A, which is a drop height of 3000mm, sadly there is no classification for 6.4mm laminated: It is classed as a safety glass.

“There was a great deal of confusion since the changes were announced and judging by the enquiries we have experienced, this is still the case nine months later. We appreciate that changing standards can be confusing, but compliance will make the difference between being able to use Secured by Design in your marketing or not. By checking that your supply chain is offering 6.8mm laminated glass as standard, you can make sure that you are covered.”

GGF RESPONDS TO CONSULTATION ON BUILDING A MARKET FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY

The Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) has called for more fiscal incentives for homeowners retrofitting their homes in response to the recent consultation from the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS)

The consultation, which closed on 9th January, invites views about the role of government in overcoming barriers to building a sustainable market for energy efficiency in the UK.

The Federation restated its long-held belief that Central Government should introduce a reduced rate of VAT for the installation of energy efficient windows and doors, highlighting that offering a “holiday” would inevitably encourage homeowners to upgrade their properties without the extra 20% cost of the installation. The GGF stressed that a VAT “holiday” would also level the playing field for bona fide companies trying to compete with rogue organisations operating in the informal economy.

In addition to measures on VAT, the GGF also supported plans within the consultation to introduce low interest loans to stimulate demand for energy efficiency measures. The GGF further called on the Government to go further and introduce direct subsidies for higher rated windows and doors, pointing out that these measures are consistently rated among the most popular with consumers.

The need to create a sustainable market for energy efficiency has been brought into sharp focus recently, as Theresa May reshuffled the Ministerial team at BEIS and launched an ambitious clean growth strategy for the country early in January.

Commenting, GGF Director of Home Improvement, Russell Day said:

“We welcome the Government’s drive to build a sustainable market for energy efficiency in the UK, in conjunction with the ambitious clean growth strategy launched by the Prime Minister in January.

The GGF has long argued for a holiday on the VAT levied on the installation of energy efficient windows and doors, measures which are consistently ranked as some of the most popular for homeowners looking to improve the efficiency of their homes.

We look forward to working closely with the Government over this consultation period.”

FIVE MORE COMPANIES SIGN UP FOR UK PAVILION AT FENSTERBAU FRONTALE 2018

The UK Pavilion at FENSTERBAU FRONTALE 2018, hosted by the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) will have five new co-exhibitors joining the six original companies at the world’s largest international trade fair for the window industry

In 2016, the GGF set up and organised the UK Pavilion within the FENSTERBAU FRONTALE exhibition. For 2018, the GGF has more than doubled the size of the Pavilion with 200m2 reserved to provide a designated area for 12 British companies to co-exhibit and reach a huge international market in excess of 100,000 trade visitors.

FENSTERBAU FRONTALE 2018 takes place in Nuremberg on 21-24 March and reflects the worldwide innovations in windows, doors and facades. Architects, carpenters, window and facade manufacturers, and the specialist trade will update on the latest profile systems, glass in architecture, fixing equipment, hardware, safety equipment, machines, installations and many more products.

The five new co-exhibitors who have signed up to be part of the UK Pavilion include:

  • Roseview Windows
  • Window Ware

James Lee, GGF Director of Group Marketing commented on the increased size of the UK Pavilion:

Why natural light should be on your renovation bucket list

Looking for ways to improve the comfort of your home while also boosting its energy performance? Look on the bright side!

As the summer months creep in you may well be starting to think about this year’s home improvements. Is it time for a conservatory? A loft extension? Perhaps a splash on a new interior colour scheme? Although this isn’t always possible when the darker winter months approach, spending just one hour in natural sunlight can improve sleep quality and make your morning routine a little easier.

The survey also revealed the average household could save up to £215 a year by replacing old, inefficient windows. GGF and FENSA to raise profiles at CTSI Symposium 2018

The GGF and FENSA are to exhibit and present at the annual Chartered Trading Standards Institute Symposium taking place in Nottingham on 4th-6th June.

The Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) Symposium is a great opportunity for GGF and FENSA to network with Trading Standards Officers but also, and more importantly, a chance to engage with key influencers from like-minded organisations such as the Advertising Standards Authority, Citizen’s Advice, Which?, TrustMark and of course the CTSI.

GGF Head of Membership and Training Richard Hearn and FENSA Director of Membership Chris Beedel will jointly deliver a presentation on the topic of “GGF & FENSA – helping Trading Standards to protect & delight consumers”.

This will convey the benefits of the award-winning GGF consumer website MyGlazing.com and the Federation’s comprehensive range of consumer protections. These include the GGF Conciliation Scheme, which helps Members and homeowners resolve any disputes, and the improved Deposit Indemnity Fund which safeguards consumers’ deposits in the unlikely event that the GGF Member company that has carried out their installation ceases to trade.

In his part of the presentation, Chris from FENSA will highlight the important role his company plays in supporting Trading Standards. This includes doing its part to regulate the industry and assisting in the prosecution of rogue companies misusing the FENSA logo.

“It is critical that when a company states it is a FENSA member – which implies that it has been inspected and audited for compliance with the Building Regulations – that this is true. This is not just important for consumers but for FENSA Members, who choose to undertake work legally and ‘play by the rules’,” Chris says.

Greg O’Donoghue Receives GGF Lifetime Achievement Award

It was a memorable evening at the G17 Awards on 17th November at Park Lane Hilton as Greg O’Donoghue received The GGF Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding contribution to the industry.

As well as being major sponsors for the event the GGF decided to mark its 40th Anniversary year with this special “Lifetime Achievement Award” and received nominations from numerous sectors of the industry.

Given his exceptional list of achievements for the industry such as being a co-founder of competent person scheme FENSA and ensuring glazing was included in the TrustMark scheme, Greg O’Donoghue deservedly won the award after 35 years in the industry during which he has become one of the most influential individuals in the domestic glazing sector.

In 2000, Greg was elected GGF President and then in 2002 as Chairman of FENSA he negotiated with Government to bring about legislative change which has proved to be for the benefit of the entire industry and consumers. Since then Greg has been a consistent industry champion on many fronts including, increasing consumer protection, improving the installation industry standards and campaigning to overcome barriers for glazing in the conservation areas.

On winning the award Greg commented, “I am truly stunned but delighted to have won this award. I can only thank my colleagues at Just Windows and Doors and all those connected to the GGF, who have helped me throughout my time in the industry.”

Greg’s longevity and gravitas in the industry, clearly highlights his passion, industry knowledge and commitment to constantly create a better trading environment for companies large and small.
